Busy night for QRS staff

08/08/08

At 2038 hours Squad 247 was alerted for unknown problems at Chapel Hill apartments. Squad 247 evaluated one patient and obtained a refusal. Shortly there after, Squad 247 was requested by Ross Police to evaluate 2 patients secondary to a hit and run accident. The crew from 247 obtained a patient refusal and assisted in packaging one patient for transport to a local hospital.

As Squad 247 was clearing the previous call, Station 211 was alerted for an unresponsive female in the Borough of West View. Knowing 210 C-3 was clearing up a call in Millvale, Squad 247 checked up on the air as ALS and was requested by the 211 unit to respond for the ALS backup. QRS crew assisted the medics in stabilizing the patient for transport.

At 0005 hours, after 2 short hours of sleep, the volunteers were alerted for a motorcycle accident with one male injured. Squad 247 rolled ALS and arrived to find one male on the ground, conscious and alert complaining of an injured left leg. Crews worked to package the patient for transport to the hospital. Crews worked on scene for approximately 20 minutes.

At 0118 Station 212, 247 QRS, 246 and 312-40 were alerted for the motor vehicle crash with entrapment. Squad 247 arrived on scene to find one car pinned underneath a box truck with severe damage to the front end and air bag deployment with one occupant still entrapped. Squad 247 began vehicle stabilization and patient access. An additional medic unit was alerted for the second patient. While 246 engine pulled a protective handline, EMS crews gained access to the passenger side of the vehicle to extricate the patient. Both patient's were transported to a local trauma center for evaluation.

The remainder of the night consisted of a lift assist and a call for a fall. Thanks to the Squad crew for keeping the squad in service on such a busy night.

Berkeley Hills Fire Department Receives DCED Grant

July 2008: The Berkeley Hills Fire Department was once again on the receiving end of a DCED grant with the help of Senator Jane Orie's office. The grant that was awarded in the amount of $18,000.00, will fully outfit the department's training and meeting facilities. This grant will help the department in supporting it's commitment to training by furnishing it's training facilities with state of the art computers and power point software that will assist instructional staff during classes. The plan for the department is to open its doors to other agencies for use so that they too can benefit from the award. The training room will be completely overhauled to support a relaxing training atmosphere. Thanks again to Senator Orie for her tireless efforts in supporting the volunteer fire departments. And as always, thank you Josh for once again making this happen.

Chase ends with MVC

07/02/08

Just after 1am this morning units were alerted to a motor vehicle crash with entrapment on Babcock boulevard near Roderick secondary to a police chase. The assignment brought EMS station 211, 247 QRS, ALS Squad 217-5 and 312 Rescue 40 as well as station 248 for the fire unit. Engine 247-1, staffed with 4 men responded. While en route police advised that the patient was self-extricated from the vehicle and that there was no need for rescue but to keep EMS coming for evaluation of the patient. 247-1 arrived on scene seconds after the update to find a tree down in the parking lot of Northway Mall and a vehicle with major damage and air bag deployment. The engine crew split and began patient evaluation and hazard control until the arrival of 248 Engine 3. Upon arrival of Ross/West View EMS Medic 214-2, crews worked to further evaluate the patient and package the patient for transport to a local trauma center for evaluation. Thanks to 248 for the assistance on scene.

This crash brings the station to a total of 910 calls for service for the year so far. A big thanks to the dedicated volunteers for taking so much time out of their lives to keep the fire company running. Without your dedication to staffing and training our company just wouldn't be the same. And also a special thanks to the officers who continue to do all they can to make the company the best it can be. Thank you gentlemen!
