May 2016

With the completion of May the volunteers responded to 28 fire runs and 62 EMS runs. Bringing the year to date call stats to 189 Fire and 357 EMS runs totaling 546 runs. One of the highlight incidents of the month was a row house fire in the borough of Millvale.

At 0747 on May 8th, 2016 the 191 box was dropped for smoke coming from the building. The ladder truck responded with 7 volunteers and operated as the second due truck company. 191 went on the scene with fire showing from divisions 1 & 2. The crew split up into inside and outside crews, the inside conducting a search, and the outside doing ladder and vent work. Shortly after making the fire floor the fire grew intensely forcing the crew out. After regrouping the men then went to the bravo exposure and trench cut the roof in an effort to stop the spread of fire. The fire grew to 3 alarms before getting a handle on the fire. The crew did some overhaul and went back in service.

Hands and Heart Mission Donation

Over the past few weeks, members of the Berkeley Hills Fire Company have been doing some spring cleaning at our Fire Station. During the cleanup, we found numerous usable kitchen items that were in great condition and not ready to be simply thrown out. This past weekend, members of our Fire Company met with a member of the Hands and Heart Mission from Gallitzen, PA, to donate nearly 100 kitchen items, including pots, pans, and utensils, for their use. The Hands and Heart Mission makes yearly trips in January to the poorest towns in Haiti, where their goal is to "strive to model a simple and balanced life within community." The Mission representative stated that the donations from the department will likely go to the orphanages who house hundreds of infants and children. For more information regarding Hands and Heart Mission, as well as the 2017 Sea Container Collection List, please see their website at http://ccwsisters.org/haiti-outreach-project/sea-container-collection-list/
